Creative Photography Prompts to keep you using your camera.

Updated: Jan 14

I went to college for photography after a year and a half undeclared haha and, I loved it. My photography professor would always give us shooting prompts that would teach us lighting, different areas of media, color, and more. You either had one hour to take all the pictures or a week. Once taken, you would upload and start to edit, sometimes though, you were required to just show the raw images. Once you edited them, you had to pick 5 to 10 images to showcase in a collage. Which picking photos is very hard. haha

I loved getting to do this and I miss it. So I thought why not? Why not make a blog documenting my photo prompts during my down time. We all have down time in photography and for me, I have updated my branding to how I like it so now what? Of course there is always marketing to be done, but I want to stay in practice of taking photos and being newer to the full time scene, I am still gaining models for concept shoots and photography friends. So these prompts are a great way to capture things with and without others.

  1. Old Things Left!

This first prompt took some time to think of because I really did not want to have to use google. Well, I thought I do live on a horse farm so there are flowers and birds all around. Maybe I can use that? Then I remember there is an old home site, now just a pile of bricks, but that is it. I am going to walk up there and see if my brain will come up with something. And it did! I decided to use old things to make something new.

Just grab your camera and a lens you want more practice on. I grabbed my lens Sigma 35 mm Art because it is newer for me and I want to learn on it some more. :) For the prompt, use or find something old. I understand that not everyone has an old home site haha, so anything that is vintage will work. This prompt is to get you to work on angels, lighting outside, and camera settings, also editing. If you are like, I have nothing old haha. Your prompt can be, Object Outside. Here you will just pick an object that you find interesting, around your house or community outside. The point of this exercise is to photograph outside in the daylight.

  1. Self Branding Portraits

This second prompt was inspired by an amazing sunset I saw after a family session I had at the lake. The colors were amazing and I could not let it go to waste. I grabbed my camera and captured images of me and of course the setting itself. This prompt encourages you to see your self in a new light and have fun with it! They can be done anywhere!

Grab your camera or phone, and whatever lenses, this is to have so much fun!

Find a location, can even be your living room wall.

This prompt is to get you to work to have fun and explore new angels, lighting, poses, and editing. The point of this exercise is to photograph yourself and create bomb branding shots.

I know it might feel awkward, but you got this! Remember there are ways around that! :)

  1. Unconventional Object

This third and final prompt is something to take you out the box. I remember doing this in college and while it is hard, it helps to embrace new ways of shooting and capturing an image. This prompt encourages you to use lighting, placement, and use of object. They can be done anywhere, no editing!

Grab your camera and your favorite lens, and an unconventional object (a box, something used for hair, anything around your house you would never put in a photo.

Just shoot around your house.

This prompt is to get you to work with an object that you would never use, challenging you to think outside the box.

Once done photographing your prompts, pick 4 images and if it says to edit, go for it!

Post on tiktok and tag me - @destinyruthphoto or add your image in the comment to this blog!

I would love to showcase everyone's work on a separate blog, will credit the photographer! Let's build a community that helps each other to thrive during those down times! :) So excited to see your work!
